Former British Prime Minister Callaghan Dies

Former British prime minister and Labor Party leader James Callaghan has died on the eve of his 93rd birthday at his home in southeastern England.

His family says his death came 11 days after that of his wife, Audrey. They were married for 67 years.

Mr. Callaghan was the longest-living former prime minister in British history. He served in the job from 1976 to '79 during a period of bitter labor unrest. His Labor government was swept away by Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives.

Mr. Callaghan was the only man to have held all four top offices in the British government - prime minister, foreign secretary, home secretary and chancellor of the exchequer.
