Vietnam Celebrates Anniversary of War's End

Tens of thousands of people packed a stadium in the Vietnamese city of Danang Tuesday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the city's surrender to communists forces.

Danang fell to North Vietnamese forces on March 29, 1975, after an aggressive military offensive. The fall of the central port city allowed the communists to advance south on Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, then the capital of South Vietnam.

Also today a U.S. navy warship arrived for a port visit in Ho Chi Minh City. The USS Gary is only the third U.S. navy vessel to stop in Vietnam since the end of the war.

Saigon fell on April 30, unifying the country and ending a decade-long conflict that killed 58,000 Americans and three million Vietnamese.
