The European Football Union has ordered Inter Milan football (soccer) club to play its next six European club competition matches in an empty stadium because of crowd trouble there earlier this week.
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary body also fined the Italian club $247,000. Inter has three days to appeal the punishment.
Of the six matches, the last two are under a probationary period of three years, which means if a further offense is committed in that time, UEFA can order the original sanction added to any further punishment for the second offense.
A UEFA Champions League second-leg quarterfinal match between Inter and rival AC Milan was abandoned Tuesday when fans threw objects and flares on the field. One of the flares struck the AC Milan goalkeeper in the neck. AC was awarded the match on a 3-0 forfeit and advanced on a 5-0 aggregate.
