Greece Ratifies EU Constitution

Greece has become the latest European Union member state to ratify the group's proposed constitution, following a vote of parliament.

Lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party and the opposition Socialists joined forces Tuesday in supporting the constitution in the 300-member chamber.

The vote makes Greece one of only a handful of EU countries to have ratified the text. Greece joined the European bloc in 1981.

France, a founding EU member, will hold a referendum on the constitution May 29th, but recent polls show the French people rejecting the text. The constitution, aimed at streamlining EU decision-making, requires ratification by all of the union's 25 member states to take effect.
