Assault on Referee Results in Expulsion of Three Players on Somali Football Team

The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has expelled three players of Somali team Elman FC from its club championship tournament after they assaulted a referee.

Mohamed Nur Abdi, Omar Osman Wakil and Abdi Isaq were thrown out of the tournamentn for attacking Tanzanian referee Frederick Baijuka following a 3-2 loss to Atletico Burundi Saturday in Mwanza, Tanzania. The three players were unhappy with Baijuka after he allowed the winning goal from what they claimed was an offside position.

CECAFA general secretary Nicholas Musonye said the expulsions should act as a warning to other players that such actions would not be tolerated at the tournament. He also pointed out that the competition was meant to promote friendship, "not to promote fighting."

The 10-team championship is ongoing. FC Elman, which was reprimanded for its players' actions, was scheduled to play Simba Sports Club of Tanzania Monday.
