Defending champion and world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland has reached the semifinals of the Hamburg Masters tennis tournament in Germany.

Federer, the top seed, ousted 2004 French Open runner-up Guillermo Coria of Argentina in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.

The Swiss player next faces 15th-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, a straight-set winner over Filippo Volandri of Italy 7-6, 6-4.

The other quarterfinals have French player Richard Gasquet facing Andreas Seppi of Italy and Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina against Christophe Rochus of Belgium. The clay-court tournament is one of several events that players are using to prepare for this month's French Open in Paris.
