Alitalia Plane Diverted from Boston

An Italian airliner on a flight from Milan to Boston has been diverted to Bangor, in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine, after the name of a passenger on the plane matched one on a U.S. government no fly list.

Transportation Security Department officials say Alitalia flight 618 is expected in Bangor shortly. It is the second time in less than a week that a Boston-bound European flight has been diverted to Bangor.

Last Thursday, a Paris to Boston flight landed there after someone on board had a name and birth date nearly the same as a person on the government's list of suspected terrorists.

The man and his family were taken off the flight for questioning while the plane continued on to its destination. U.S. airlines have to electronically transmit passenger lists to the Homeland Security Department so officials can check the names against terrorism watch lists.
