Protesters burned an effigy during a march against the social security reforms in Panama City, Wednesday |
Police used tear gas and shotgun blasts to disperse the protesters who hurled bottles and rocks.
The protests since Monday have been organized by opponents of a government proposal to save money in the government pension system through reforms such as requiring an older retirement age. Officials say the pension system is facing a serious budget deficit.
The reforms must still be approved by the Panamanian Congress.
