Police in Indian Kashmir say an avalanche has swept through a village in the southern Anantnag district, killing seven people.
Local authorities say the snowslide hit the village of Hanjipora, home to nomadic shepherds, known as Bakarwals, early Monday. They say rescue workers are looking for more people buried under a thick layer of snow.
Authorities say fresh snowfall and heavy rains over the past week triggered the avalanche.
In February, freezing temperatures, avalanches and food shortages caused by the coldest winter in years killed hundreds of people in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
