Hariri Slate Says it Will Have Parliamentary Majority

The Lebanese opposition alliance led by Saad Hariri says it won enough seats in Sunday's final stage of the country's elections to secure a majority in parliament.

Final results are not expected until Monday. But members of the anti-Syrian slate say they won the 21 seats they needed to control the 128-member parliament. The alliance was facing a slate led by former anti-Syrian general Michel Aoun, who recently allied himself with pro-Syrian politicians.

The vote, staggered by region, caps four months of political turmoil triggered by the February 14 assassination of Saad Hariri's father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The killing triggered massive anti-Syrian protests in Beirut and intense international pressure that forced Syria to withdraw 14,000 troops from the country. The Beirut government also quit under pressure.
