Mexican authorities say they have arrested a Lebanese-born British citizen wanted by the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The Mexican Attorney General's office announced late Tuesday that police had arrested Amer Haykel in the northern state of Baja California.
A statement said U.S. authorities had linked Mr. Haykel to extremist groups presumably involved in the terror attacks on New York and Washington.
The statement did not say when Mr. Haykel was arrested or specifically why he was taken into custody. The attorney general says the suspect was taken to Mexico City for further legal procedures.
