Mexico has blamed the United States for confusion that led to the arrest of a British citizen who had been falsely suspected of terrorist links.
Mexican presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said Thursday that the United States had never removed Amer Haykel's name from an alert list that had been sent to Mexican authorities.
Mr. Haykel is a Lebanese-born British citizen. Mexican police arrested him earlier this week on the belief he had links with extremist groups connected with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
Mexican authorities released him Wednesday, saying he does not represent a threat to national security and is not wanted by authorities in any country. They say he has simply been in Mexico as a tourist for several days.
