17 Killed in Fresh Violence in Afghanistan

Reports from Afghanistan say 12 Afghan soldiers were killed Sunday when their vehicle ran over a land mine in eastern Paktika province.

The reports quote a provincial deputy police chief, Ghulam Nabi Salim, as saying it is not clear if the blast was part of an attack or the result of an old mine left over from a quarter century of fighting.

Also Sunday, in southern Kandahar province, Afghan police killed three Taleban insurgents during a shootout near the town of Spin Boldak on the border with Pakistan.

In a separate incident, in the same province, two Afghan drivers were killed when Taleban guerillas attacked and set fire to a convoy carrying fuel to U.S. bases in Uruzgan province.

The newest violence comes a day after suspected Taleban rebels killed 10 Afghan policemen in an ambush in southern Helmand province.
