West Indies Leads Sri Lanka in First Test

The West Indies' cricket team has held host Sri Lanka to only 227 all out in its first innings of the second day of their first test in Colombo.

After reaching 285 all out in its first innings, Captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul's Caribbean squad frustrated the hosts Thursday with Chaminda Vaas the top scorer with only 49 runs.

Muttiah Muralitharan added another 36 runs for Sri Lanka before being bowled out by Jermain Lawson.

Muralitharan was Lawson's fourth victim of the day. The 23-year-old Jamaican took four wickets while allowing 59 runs in 14.3 overs.

However, Chaminda Vaas struck back in the West Indies' second innings, taking two wickets while allowing only four runs as the visitors reached 17 for three by stumps.

The Caribbean squad is without some of its top players, including star batsman Brian Lara, who refused to sign a tour contract because of a sponsorship dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board.
