5 Turkish Soldiers Killed in Kurdish Rebel Bomb Attack

update

Turkish media say Kurdish rebels have killed five Turkish soldiers and wounded seven others in a bomb attack in the southeast of the country.

Reports say the bomb exploded early Friday at the entrance of the local military police headquarters in Hakkari province, which borders Iraq and Iran.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has stepped up violence in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast over the past few months, after it called off a five-year unilateral cease-fire in June 2004.

More than 37,000 have died, most of them PKK rebels, since the group took up arms against Ankara in 1984.

Some information for this report provided by AP and AFP.
