Chinese authorities say Typhoon Matsa has struck the country's southeast coast, killing at least one person and forcing the evacuation of more than one million others.
State media say the storm made landfall early Saturday just north of the city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province with sustained winds of more than 140 kilometers per hour, and higher gusts. Matsa forced officials in the city of Shanghai to close the country's busiest port. Air traffic in the area also has been grounded.
The typhoon is expected to weaken as it moves northwest over land, but weather forecasters warn of heavy rain and flooding. Mud and rockslides are also possible.
Typhoon Matsa lashed Taiwan with strong winds and torrential rain on Friday, forcing offices, schools and financial markets to close.
