Ethiopian Opposition Calls for Provisional Government of National Unity

In a news conference today, Ethiopia’s opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy, CUD, called for the ruling party to form a “caretaker” government of national unity that would last no longer than one year.

The CUD's Election Executive Committee Chairman Gizachew Shiferaw told Voice of America reporter William Eagle that the interim government would end the ruling EPRDF party’s links with the judiciary, the press and the electoral board – and would prepare for new polls.

Mr. Gizachew said the CUD is canvassing opinion makers and the public to decide on the direction the opposition will take if the government does not accept its proposal.
