Northern Ireland's Protestant Paramilitary Group Calls For End to Riots

The leading Protestant paramilitary group in Northern Ireland has called for an end to riots that have shaken the British province's capital Belfast for three straight nights.

The Ulster Defense Association issued its call after rioters in the city and nearby areas attacked officers with homemade bombs and other objects.

Authorities say about 60 police officers have been injured since the violence erupted Saturday when police re-routed an Orange Order Protestant parade out of a Roman Catholic neighborhood. Police arrested 63 rioters.

The Orange Order holds annual marches to remember a 1690 victory over Catholic forces. Many Catholics say the march is aimed at starting trouble.

In July, rioting by Catholic protesters angry over an Orange Order parade wounded nearly 100 people in Belfast.
