British Police Arrest Nigerian Governor in Money Laundering Probe

Nigerian officials say British police have arrested a Nigerian state governor as part of an investigation by London authorities into possible money laundering.

Nigeria's anti-corruption agency says Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha from the oil-rich southeastern state of Bayelsa was arrested Thursday in London.

Nigerian newspapers reported British authorities had found nearly two million dollars in cash in the governor's London home.

Bayelsa state officials have not commented on the arrest.

Mr. Alamieyeseigha has supported a campaign by an ethnic group, Ijaw, for the oil-rich southern Niger Delta region to receive a greater share of Nigeria's oil income.

Local communities in the region have long complained they are deprived of the money made by multinational oil companies working in Nigeria.

Another Nigerian state governor, Joshua Dariye of Plateau state, was arrested last year by British police for money laundering.
