Dengue Fever Grips Singapore

Dengue fever is spreading at a record pace in Singapore.

Environment and Water Resources minister, Yaacob Ibrahim, told the Singapore parliament Monday that in the week ending Saturday, there were almost 700 new cases, a new high for a single week.

The total number of infected people for the year so far has surpassed 10,000 -- another record.

Singapore officials say dengue fever has killed eight people this year, the same as for all of 2004.

The Singapore government has engaged foreign and local experts to study the sudden upsurge and advise on the best strategies to deal with the problem.

Authorities are undertaking an $18 million program to try to eradicate the mosquitos that spread the virus.
