Three Colombian Police Die in Ambush

Colombian authorities say leftist guerrillas have killed three police officers in the mountains of the nation's southwest.

The attack occurred early Thursday, near Consaca in Narino state. Local officials say the police were responding to a phone call summoning them to the area to investigate a crime.

Authorities say that as the officers drove along a mountain highway, their attackers fired on the police vehicle, killing two policemen instantly. A third died later, and a fourth officer was injured.

The attackers are believed to be members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which has been fighting for four decades to overthrow the government.
