US Calls on Zanzibar to Investigate Alleged Election Irregularities

The United States has called on the government in Tanzania's semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar to investigate all allegations of elections irregularities.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack urged the government Tuesday to carry out an investigation in what he called a thorough and transparent manner.

However, he said despite the allegations of irregularities, U.S. observers who monitored the election noted a vast improvement over previous polls in terms of how the vote was run.

He said U.S. monitors from the National Democratic Institute, an overseas branch of the U.S. Democratic Party, have been active in the country for several years to improve the country's elections infrastructure.
