S. Africa to Help Namibia in Probe of Apartheid-Era Mass Graves

update

South Africa says it will assist Namibia in the investigation of apartheid-era mass graves recently discovered in northern Namibia.

A South African government spokesman, Ronnie Mamoepa, says Pretoria has committed itself to the probe.

This comes after Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba asked South Africa to send forensic experts to help identify the bodies found in the graves.

The graves are believed to date from a 1989 battle between South African security forces and fighters from the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). SWAPO was fighting a war of independence at the time for Namibia, which was occupied by South African troops.

Namibia won independence from South Africa in 1990.
