West Indian batsman Brian Lara has come within 11 runs of Allan Border's record for most test runs by helping his team score 352-7 on the first day of its final test against Australia in Adelaide.
Lara silenced his critics by scoring 202 not out and needs only 12 runs to surpass Border, a former Australian captain who scored 11,174 test runs.
The 36-year-old left-handed Lara had been criticized recently for scoring only 107 runs in his previous six innings against Australia. He had not posted a test 100 since June. However, Lara said that he targeted the final test in Adelaide as his chance for another huge score.
Friday's result is the eighth time Lara has surpassed 200 test runs in his career. Australia leads the three-match series, 2-0.
