Opposition Leaders Postpone Protest Rally in Azerbaijan

update

Azerbaijan's main opposition party again has postponed a planned rally to protest last month's parliamentary elections, which it says were fraudulent.

Freedom coalition officials say Saturday's demonstration was called off to avoid a confrontation with authorities. No new date has been set.

Opposition leaders also postponed a rally last week after the Baku city government insisted that the party hold its rally outside the city limits and refused to permit the use of a city square.

Azerbaijan's opposition had been staging almost weekly demonstrations to protest the election, which it says were fraudulent. International observers also have criticized the vote.

Police used batons and water cannon in breaking up a demonstration last month, after protest leaders exceeded the allotted time and attempted to launch a sit-in.
