Racial conflict that began on the beaches of Sydney, Australia, has spread into surrounding neighborhoods.
Thousands of white youths on Sunday rallied against people of Middle Eastern origin at suburban beaches south of the city.
The crowds drank alcohol, waved Australian flags and later clashed with police and attacked people of Middle Eastern appearance.
Sunday night, gangs of youths of Middle Eastern descent retaliated by smashing the windows of more than 100 cars.
At least 20 people were injured, including five police officers and two paramedics. Twenty-two were arrested.
The tension was apparently triggered by an attack last week on two beach lifeguards, allegedly by young men of Middle Eastern origin.
