German Ice Rink Roof Collapse Kills 5

Authorities in southern Germany say at least five people were killed and 25 injured when the roof of an ice rink collapsed Monday.

Police in the town of Bad Reichenhall in the Bavarian Alps say there were about 50 people inside the building, mostly children. Rescuers believe at least 20 people are buried in the wreckage.

A police spokesman says it is unclear what caused the collapse, but officials say heavy snow was piled on the roof.

The head of a local ice hockey club said town authorities canceled practice Monday because they believed roof was in danger of falling, but that the ice rink was still open to the public.

Police say they will investigate.
