3 Killed in Continuing Afghan Violence

Afghan officials say suspected Taleban insurgents have raided a remote security post in the southern Nimroz province, killing at least one policeman and wounding four others.

Provincial governor Ghulam Dastagir Azad says between 50 and 60 militants armed with machine-guns and rockets were involved in the assault late Wednesday.

He said several of the militants also appeared to have been wounded or killed in the gun battle because pools of blood were found on the ground, along with pieces of clothes and shoes.

Also Wednesday, two members of a pro-government militia were killed in central Ghazni province in a remote-controlled bomb blast blamed on the insurgents.

Meanwhile, an Italian diplomat said two Italian aid workers found dead in their beds in a guarded compound in Kabul Thursday died in their sleep from a faulty gas heater.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
