Morocco's King Mohammed has called on Western Sahara leaders to hold discussions on a proposed autonomy plan for the disputed territory.
The king says he wants a royal consulting committee of local and tribal leaders to consult on the province's future. But he added that Morocco has no plans to give up any of its territory.
King Mohammed says he would like to see the dispute worked out in a way that would let inhabitants of Western Sahara manage their regional affairs while remaining under Moroccan rule.
The king spoke in Laayoune Saturday during a visit to Western Sahara.
Morocco annexed Western Sahara in 1975. Rebels from the Polisario Front fought for independence until a U.N. brokered ceasefire in 1991.
