Kenyan Runners Claim Boston Marathon Victory


A pair of Kenyan runners - Robert Cheruiyot and Rita Jeptoo - have swept the men's and women's races at the Boston Marathon.

Cheruiyot set a course record of 2:07.14 hours Monday, while Jeptoo completed the 42.2 kilometer run in 2:23.38 hours. Making her American race debut, Jeptoo becomes the sixth Kenyan woman to claim the title in seven years.

Kenya's Benjamin Maiyo finished second for the men, one minute behind Cheruiyot (2:08.21), while American Meb Keflezighi finished third (2:09:56).

Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia took second place in the women's event, 10 seconds behind Jeptoo, while third place went to Reiko Tosa of Japan (2:24:11).

Meanwhile, South African Ernst Van Dyk won the men's wheelchair marathon race for a record sixth consecutive time, finishing in 1:25.29 hours. Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland won the woman's wheelchair race in 1:43.42.

The field of 22,517 official entrants was the second largest in Boston Marathon history, with runners representing 94 countries and all 50 states.

The Boston Marathon is the opening race in the World Marathon Majors competition that started this year. Points will be awarded to top runners based on their finishes in five of the elite races - Boston, London, New York, Berlin and Chicago.
