South and North Korea have opened high-level military talks aimed at easing tensions on the divided peninsula.
The meeting of generals runs Tuesday through Thursday in the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone that separates the two countries.
South Korean officials say the two sides are looking to prevent naval clashes along their western sea frontier.
They say the generals also will discuss the opening of cross-border rail transportation. North and South Korea have agreed to test a railway line next week.
The last round of military talks in March was bogged down mainly by North Korea's demand for the drawing of a new border in the Yellow Sea.
North Korea does not recognize the border established by the United Nations at the end of the Korean War in 1953.
