Major Military Offensive in Eastern Afghanistan Concludes

update

U.S. military officials say one of the largest military operations targeting Taleban and al-Qaida-linked insurgents in eastern Afghanistan has concluded.

A U.S. Army spokesman Thomas Collins Wednesday said Operation Mountain Lion was a success.

He did not provide the exact number of militants killed, but Afghan sources say at least six were killed and at least seven others were captured in eastern Afghanistan.

The U.S. military did acknowledge coalition casualties. A U.S. helicopter crashed earlier this month in Kunar province, killing all 10 soldiers onboard.

Launched in mid-April, Operation Mountain Lion is one of the largest combat operations in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taleban in 2001.

More than 2,000 coalition and Afghan soldiers were involved in the offensive.

Some information for this report was provided by AP.
