Broadway Honored in Tony Awards


The best of Broadway is being honored in New York at the 60th annual Tony Awards.

The 1920's musical The Drowsy Chaperone has garnered the most nominations for awards with 13. It is closely followed by the musical version of The Color Purple with 11 nominations.

Other musicals that have been nominated for awards are Jersey Boys which tells the story of 1960's pop group, Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, and The Wedding Singer based on the 1998 movie starring Drew Barrymore.

Considered frontrunner for best play is British playwright Alan Bennett's drama, The History Boys.

Other best play nominees are The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Rabbit Hole, and Shining City.

The awards ceremony caps a booming season for Broadway where ticket sales reached $861.6 million.
