France, Portugal to Meet for First Time in World Cup Semifinals

When France and Portugal meet in their World Cup semifinal in Munich Wednesday, it will be the first time the two teams have met at football's most prestigious tournament.

However, the two teams have met in other major tournaments and France has had the definite edge over Portugal. Their most recent meeting in a key match was in the semifinals of the 2000 European Championships, where France won on a golden goal from Zinedine Zidane. They also met in the European Championships in 1984, and France triumphed again, winning 3-2 after extra time.

But in a contentious quarterfinal match at the 1996 Olympics, Portugal beat France 2-1 in extra time. Eleven players were booked during the match played in the heat of Miami's Orange Bowl.

France has won 13 of the 19 matchups between the two countries. Portugal has five victories and there has been one draw.
