UN Human Rights Council Demands Israel Halt Offensive on Gaza

update

The United Nations Human Rights Council has called for an end to Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip launched after Palestinian militants abducted an Israeli soldier.

The council adopted a resolution proposed by the Organization of the Islamic Conference on a vote of 29 - 11, with five abstentions Thursday in Geneva.

The resolution urged all parties involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to respect the rules of international humanitarian law and refrain from violence against civilians.

The U.N. council also agreed to send a fact-finding mission to the Palestinian territories to investigate the human rights situation there.

Israeli ambassador Itzhak Levanon deplored the council's resolution, saying it was one-sided, and he accused the U.N. body of having an anti-Israeli bias.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
