Tropical Storm Bilis Kills 188 in Southern China

Flooding and landslides in the wake of Tropical Storm Bilis have killed at least 188 people across southern China.

The official Xinhua news agency said early Tuesday the victims were from six provinces - Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang. More than 1.7 seven million people have been evacuated in recent days.

China Central Television says nearly 12 million residents have been affected by storm's aftermath.

Xinhua says government agencies have mounted relief operations and are rushing aid to the disaster-hit zones. Flooding and mudslides have paralyzed transportation and communications in the region.

Bilis came ashore Friday in Fujian province as a strong tropical storm.

More heavy rain is forecast in Guangdong and Hunan this week.

Before hitting China and weakening, Bilis had reached typhoon strength, and killed at least 28 people in the Philippines and one person in Taiwan.
