Death Toll From Ethiopia Floods Hits at Least 220

update

Search teams in eastern Ethiopia have found at least 10 more bodies in the mud and debris left behind by a flash flood over the weekend.

The death toll is now up to at least 220 people, and authorities say they can not account for 300 others.

The rain-swollen Dechatu river burst its banks near the town of Dire Dawa late Saturday. Many people, including children, drowned in their homes as they slept.

Annual rains often cause flooding in Ethiopia's southern and eastern lowland areas.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
