Steve Irwin to Have Private Funeral, Public Memorial Service

The family of Australian wildlife television star and conservationist Steve Irwin says he will be given a private funeral for relatives and friends within the next week.

Irwin's father, Bob, said Thursday the family had considered the government's offer of a state funeral, but decided against it. He has said his son would have wanted to be remembered as an ordinary guy.

The family also said today Irwin's many fans will have a chance to pay their respects at a public memorial service to be held within two weeks.

The venues for the two services have not yet been announced.

The popular wildlife television host was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary off Australia's northeast coast.

Irwin's body has been taken to a funeral home near his Australia Zoo in Queensland state.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP.
