UEFA Awards 2008 Champions League Final to Moscow

update

The European Football Union - UEFA - has awarded the 2008 Champions League final to Moscow and the 2009 game to Rome.

The UEFA Executive Committee made the choices Wednesday at its meeting in Slovenia. The committee looked at such things as security, stadium capacity, access, and transportation.

Moscow will hold the final in Luzhniki stadium, an 85,000-seat arena inaugurated in 1956. Rome's Stadio Olimpico - which hosted the 1960 Olympics and the 1990 World Cup - is the venue for the 2009 game.

The committee also decided that the 2008 UEFA Cup final will be held in Manchester, England and in 2009 it will be in Istanbul, Turkey. The City of Manchester Stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and is the home field of Manchester City football club. Istanbul's Sukru Saracoglu is home to the Turkish club Fenerbahce.
