NHL: Defending Champion Hurricanes Lose Opener


The National ice Hockey League season opened Wednesday night with the reigning champion Carolina Hurricanes losing to the Buffalo Sabres in a shoot-out and Dallas beating Colorado in overtime.

Daniel Briere scored the only goal of the shoot-out and Sabres' goalie Ryan Miller stopped Carolina to give the Buffalo the 3-2 win. Miller made 32 saves in regulation while Jason Pominville and Chris Drury scored in regulation for the Sabres.

Meanwhile at Toronto, Martin Gerber made 33 saves as Ottawa beat Toronto, 4-1 in the season opener. Patrick Eaves, Chris Neil, Cristoph Schubert, and Daniel Alfredsson scored for Ottawa.

In Denver, Darryl Sydor came out of the penalty box to take a pass from goalkeeper Marty Turco and score the winning goal in overtime as the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2.
