The St. Louis Cardinals have taken the opening game of Major League Baseball's World Series, defeating the favored Detroit Tigers, 7-2.
Rookie pitcher Anthony Reyes held the host Tigers to four hits Saturday in his eight innings on the mound. St. Louis star hitters Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen hit home runs in the early innings against young Tiger pitcher Justin Verlander, who was replaced in the sixth inning. He was responsible for all seven St. Louis runs.
The well-rested Tigers committed three errors in their first game since winning the American League title the previous Saturday.
The Cardinals, who won the National League title in a tough deciding seventh game against the New York Mets late Thursday, out-hit the Tigers eight to four.
The second game of the best-of-seven, 102nd World Series will be played late Sunday. Kenny Rogers will pitch for host Detroit against former Tiger pitcher Jeff Weaver.
