Attackers Injure Montenegrin Author, Kill Driver

update

Three masked attackers have injured a well-known Montenegrin novelist and killed his driver.

Local media report that the attack on Jevrem Brkovic occurred late Tuesday evening outside his home in the capital Podgorica. The assailants beat the author and shot and killed his driver Srdjan Vojicic who had intervened to protect the author.

Doctors say they treated Brkovic at a Podgorica hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known. But the author later told reporters he believed what he called "murderers and gangsters who recognized themselves" in his latest novel were behind the attack.

Brkovic was the target of several politically motivated attacks because of his opposition to Serbia's role in the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s. The author spent much of the period in Croatia and returned to Montenegro in 1999.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
