NHL: Penguins Edge Kings


Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin, 20, made National Hockey League history Wednesday night in the Penguins's 4-3 overtime win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The Russian rookie sensation scored a goal in the first period to become the first NHL player in 89 years to score a goal in his first six games. He joins Joe Malone, Newsy Lalonde and Cy Denneny, who accomplished the feat in the league's 1917-18 inaugural season.

Malkin capped his history-making night when the scored the game-winning goal on a power play to give Pittsburgh its fifth straight win.

The other winners in the NHL on Wednesday were Carolina, Colorado, Toronto, Detroit, Dallas, New York and Nashville.

Goalie Cam Ward made 40 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-2. Teammates Rod Brind'Amor and Ray Whitney scored two goals each. The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3. Colorado goalie Jose Theodore made 41 saves.

The Toronto Maple Leafs downed the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2. The Detroit Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames 3-2. The Dallas Stars earned a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Jaromir Jagr scored on a power play with just under two minutes left in overtime to clinch the New York Rangers' 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. And the Nashville Predators beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 for their fourth straight win. The loss snaps Edmonton's six-game home winning streak.
