NHL: Edmonton Snaps Four-Game Losing Streak


In the National Hockey League Friday, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Ryan Smythe scored twice for the Oilers, while teammates Ales Hemsky and Joffrey Lupul each scored a goal. Edmonton goalie Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves.

Elsewhere in the NHL, Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek stopped 21 shots in the Red Wings 3-0 shutout over the Nashville Predators. The victory extends Detroit's winning streak to eight games. It also marked the second consecutive shutout for Hasek and the 71st of his career. Nashville's loss loss snapped a five-game winning streak.

Michael Nylander scored two goals as the New York Rangers beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-2. The Ottawa Senators defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3. Buffalo's Thomas Vanek scored his second goal 19 seconds into overtime to lift the Sabres to a 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers.

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 to snap an eight-game losing streak. And goalie Mikka Kiprusoff stopped 37 shots as the Calgary Flames posted a 3-0 shutout victory over the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks had not been beaten in regulation for the first 16 games of the season, setting an NHL record.
