German Environmental Group Says World Making Little Progress Against Global Warming

A German-based environmental group says Sweden, Britain and Denmark are doing the most to protect against climate change.

Germanwatch, along with the group Climate Action Network-Europe, Monday ranked the world's top 56 producers of greenhouse gases, which many scientists say are causing the Earth to get warmer.

Their study says the three European countries are helping fight climate change with such initiatives as support for renewable energy.

But the study says current efforts to stop global warming overall are insufficient. The director of Climate Action Network-Europe Matthias Duwe said that if climate change protection were an Olympic sport, no country would win a medal.

China, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia are at the bottom of the list. The United States - the world's biggest producer of greenhouse gases - ranks 53rd.

The White House has said President Bush is aggressively fighting global warming.

Also Monday, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin called for a European-wide tax on imports from countries that have not ratified the Kyoto global warming treaty. They include the United States and China.

The report was released at a United Nations climate conference in Kenya.
