US Skaters Capture Gold at Cup of Russia Grand Prix

Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto of the United States have captured the ice dancing gold medal at the Cup of Russia Grand Prix figure skating event in Moscow.

After their free dance performance Sunday, Belbin and Agosto finished with an overall score of 186.33 points, just less than one point ahead of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia. Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder of France took the bronze (183.53).

Domnina and Shabalin won the closing free dance competition dressed as Russian peasants and dancing to music from Borodin's Prince Igor. Belbin and Agosto placed second in a ballroom-style performance to classic movie tunes.

But the Russians started the free dance in third place overall - after Shabalin's fall in Saturday's original dance - and were just short of earning enough points to overtake the Americans.

The results left Russia without a single gold medal for the first time in the event's decade-long history. Brian Joubert of France won the men's, Switzerland's Sarah Meier took the women's gold and Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won the pairs.
