Costa Rican President to Donate Salary to Charity

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias says he will donate his yearly salary to several of his nation's charities.

In a statement released Wednesday, Mr. Arias said beginning in January he will donate the money discreetly to organizations that help the elderly, children, the disabled and others in need.

The 1987 Nobel Peace Prize winner said donating the money will not hurt his standard of living. He said he will not live "better or worse with my salary."

Based on his monthly salary, Mr. Arias' donation will amount to more than $100,000 for Costa Rican charities.
