Apparent Tornado Hits New Orleans Area, Killing One

An apparent tornado has struck the New Orleans area, killing an elderly woman and injuring about 30 other people.

The storm hit overnight Tuesday. It cut off power to thousands, ripped apart homes and businesses, and scattered debris throughout the area.

Local schools were closed for the day.

The woman who died in the storm, an 85-year-old, was living in a temporary trailer issued by the federal government after Hurricane Katrina hit the region in 2005.

Many of the affected residents are still trying to recover from Katrina, which devastated parts of New Orleans and the U.S. Gulf Coast.
