Air Mauritania Hijack Ends in Spain, Suspect Arrested

update

Officials in Spain say security forces have raided a hijacked plane and freed the nearly 80 passengers and crew aboard.

Officials say the Air Mauritania passenger plane was hijacked after it left the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, Thursday and was flown to Spain's Canary Islands.

Shortly after the plane landed in Spain, authorities raided the aircraft and arrested a single suspect. They say they believe he was the only hijacker involved.

It is not clear if anyone was injured in the hijacking or raid.

Mauritanian officials say the hijacker wanted to travel to France.

They say the plane was scheduled to stop in the northern city of Nouadhibou but was taken over and diverted.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
