Argentine Ship Evacuated After Catching Fire

A group of 269 people aboard an Argentine icebreaker had to abandon ship Wednesday after a fire broke out while the vessel was in the south Atlantic Ocean.

Military officials said the fire started in the generator of the ship, the Almirante Irizar, and that flames quickly spread out of control.

Crew members and passengers escaped in life rafts and were later picked up by fishing vessels.

No serious injuries were reported.

The incident took place in waters east of the Patagonian city of Puerto Madryn, off the coast of southern Argentina.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
